What does an electrical renovation cost? The real factors

Search for electrical renovation prices and you mostly find numbers without context. That isn't honest: the cost depends on your specific home and on choices you make yourself. What is generally true are the factors that drive the price. We list them here, so you can read — and compare — a quote.

§01

Why a fixed price list would be dishonest

Two homes of the same size can need completely different electrical renovations: different installation condition, different layout, different wishes. A serious contractor looks at the situation first and then describes the full scope in a quote — so there are no surprises later. Distrust prices promised without a site visit or photos.

§02

The biggest cost drivers

Scope matters most: the number of circuits, sockets, switches and lighting points. Then come the condition of the existing installation (what is reusable, what is not), whether the fuse box needs replacing, and the installation method: surface-mounted is faster, chased-in wiring with plaster repair takes more work.

Finally, finishing counts: with walls already open during a full renovation, the same result costs less than working in a furnished, finished home.

§03

Targeted renovation or full renewal?

Not every home needs full rewiring. Often a targeted renovation is enough: tackle the fuse box, the earthing and the most critical circuits, and keep the rest documented. Full renewal costs more but delivers a completely new, future-ready base. A good quote makes this distinction explicit — and doesn't sell you a full renewal when it isn't needed.

§04

Where not to cut corners

Protection (residual-current devices and breakers sized to real usage), solid earthing and correct documentation with a single-line diagram are what prove their value at inspection, at resale and above all when something fails. Save on finishing options rather than on the safety base.

§05

Combine smartly with other works

Already planning a heat pump, solar panels, an EV charger or network cabling? Combine the preparations with the electrical renovation while the routes are accessible. Adding the same provision later means breaking, refinishing and paying again.
